Movie Review Station

Two More Independance Day films on Deck

Independance Day was a self contained action adveture alien invasion movie. It started, and it ended – complete story with a satisfying ending. So of course, they are forcing it into a trilogy.

Obsessed with Film shares:

This story has since been denied by Smith’s rep to Gossip Cop, but the “not true at this time” quote tells me that talks are progressing but no deal has yet to be made.

We know Fox and Emmerich want sequels off the ground and have been pretty aggressive in their quest since late last year – it’s just a case of convincing Smith to return which isn’t easy given all his previous big franchises are also attempting to lure him back.

According to an IESB exclusive, Will Smith is now signed on for the long awaited (?) ‘Independence Day’ sequels. Yes sequels – two more movies. That makes it another trilogy we never asked for.

So Will Smith’s camp is denying its not true “at this time” which means they could be talking about it. Or doing it without Smith.

But is there any need for it? Well of course if they think it will make money then there is a “need” for it.

I admit I am curious about what the would would look like with all of its major cities wiped out, and with no tourist landmarks left, I don’t know what they will put on the poster.

Or what kind of story they could move forward with, let alone two. If there are more of the aliens left out there who come back for revenge, I doubt they would underestimate our crop dusters and virus programmers this time!

Review: Repo Men

Thanks for checking out our Repo Men review.

Genre: Action Sci-fi
Directed by: Miguel Sapochnik
Staring: Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, Alice Braga, Liev Schreiber
Released: March 19th, 2010

THE GENERAL IDEA

In the futuristic action-thriller Repo Men, humans have extended and improved our lives through highly sophisticated and expensive mechanical organs created by a company called The Union. The dark side of these medical breakthroughs is that if you don’t pay your bill, The Union sends its highly skilled repo men to take back its property…with no concern for your comfort or survival.

THE GOOD

Forest Witaker and Jude Law kick some major ass in this sci-fi thriller. Seeing these guys do their job is morbidly amusing, but as the predictable turn of events has one of their top bounty hunters the recipient of their overpriced product he is now changed from hunter to the prey. But that’s mostly all we get out of this movie is some action and some loose storyline to bring the action on.

THE BAD

Inspired strongly (aka ripped off) from the stage musical Repo: The Genetic Opera, this sci-fi thriller presents the ethical question of scientific advancement vs human rights. Its a basic theme that gets lost in the action of sticking it to the man in the lightly veiled sense of redemption.

The message is lost in all the fluff and we are left with some good action scenes.

OVERALL

With the Heath Care Reform taking its first stride forward this past weekend, I had to think there was some irony that this film presents a very real parallel of the business of health care in the United States. While people are treated like financially traded commodities instead of having their ailments attended to, this movie shows an extreme of that line of thinking.

But things go splodey and boom instead of getting even a little thought provoking.

Review: The Bounty Hunter

Thanks for checking out our The Bounty Hunter review.

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Directed by: Andy Tennant
Staring: Jennifer Anniston, Gerard Butler, Joel Garland
Released:

THE GENERAL IDEA

Milo Boyd (Gerard Butler), a down-on-his-luck bounty hunter, gets his dream job when he is assigned to track down his bail-jumping ex-wife, reporter Nicole Hurly (Jennifer Aniston). He thinks all that’s ahead is an easy payday, but when Nicole gives him the slip so she can chase a lead on a murder cover-up, Milo realizes that nothing ever goes simply with him and Nicole.

THE GOOD

There are a good number of one-liners and situations that are chuckle worthy, and Gerard proves once again that he can play a hardass with a softy side. Jennifer Anniston appears to be immune to aging, and looks as pretty as she always is.

We also get to see Peter Greene, and ever since he was in The Mask as Dorian Tyrell, all I ever seem to see this guy in is roles as a gangster or crime boss. His role is pretty minor in this but just meaty enough not to call it a cameo.

THE BAD

I kept hoping Jennifer Anniston would prove to be more than the iconic character Friends has made her, but she plays the same character with a different job. It works for this film as she doesn’t have to be anything but a career minded woman who hates her ex-husband, but she is just Anniston playing Anniston. Gerard and her have a chemistry, but nothing that makes you think they should be together. Just that they enjoy torturing each other.

I am going to spoil something here, but it might not be a big spoiler. The plot is terribly predictable to the point that you wonder if they didn’t care that you saw that coming. I was hoping for War of the Roses, but instead I got the eye rolling “of course”. They do try to stand out as having the story resolve a little different than normal, but for the most part you see it coming a mile away.

OVERALL

Some brief chuckles, an ok story and a predictable ending. I don’t know that I would recommend this even if all the other movies were rented on the shelf, but save yourself the time and don’t go to the theater.

Review: Kick-Ass

Thanks for checking out our Kick-Ass Review

Genre: Comedy Action
Directed by: Matthew Vaughn
Staring: Aaron Johnson, Clark Duke, Evan Peters, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Nic Cage
Released: April 16, 2010

THE GENERAL IDEA

Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan with a few friends and who lives alone with his father. His life is not very difficult and his personal trials not that overwhelming. However, one day he makes the simple decision to become a super-hero even though he has no powers or training.

THE GOOD

This movie most certainly kicks ass. There is a LOT of incredible action and a great sense of humour about it all. There is a nice contrast between Kick-Ass becoming the hero, and the real capable “heroes” which are more anti-heroes, but they only shoot bad people.

Nic Cage is ON in this. He is incredible here and every bit the caring father and hardcore violent vigilante all at the same time. And if that wasn’t enough, his daughter in this is just freaking amazing.

This movie should have been called Hit-Girl because Hit Girl is awesome. You have to be reminded to stop falling for her because she is like 11 or something. Shes adorable, and she can dish it out. I loved this character. Its all very believable, while incredibly over the top. The blowback alone from those pistols should dislocate her arms, but she doesn’t lift a car or anything silly. When she punches someone they bounce back like you would if an 11 year old punched you in the face.

The story is light, but still works well with the characters involved. Its a unique angle to jump into this world with Kick-Ass leading the way when everyone else is far more fun to watch than Kick-Ass himself.

THE BAD

There are a few dry “story” parts of the movie where things kind of lose their pacing, but when the aciton is on, its ON. The movie seems to stop and go like a track star with a limp. One leg is a little slower than the other.

Another thing I didnt care for was Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and while even he admits that he is milking the nerd roles, he is juts McLovin in a mask in this. Ok, maybe a little less nerdy and not so foul mouthed, but this guy is a one trick pony.

OVERALL

A good fun flick with more good going for it and really no outright bad parts, just less good. But its a lot less good. Its a great rush, but you might have seen all the action from the trailers.

On a side note, much of this was filmed in Toronto Canada, while the Highschool scenes were all done at Churchill Secondary right near my home in Hamilton. The “cruising in the Mistmobile” scene was shot as they drive down Yonge Street in Toronto, and you see signs for Future Shop (only in Canada – it was our Best Buy, now we have both) and when they walk past the theater you see Scotiabank logos on the door, also only in Canada.

New Expendables Trailer Online

A new Expendables Trailer is online and it looks pretty fun. A little less comical than the trailer released last year, but still made of awesome.

I guess they decided that everyone knew about the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis cameo right in the trailer. Maybe they filmed that while planning their next Planet Hollywood location?

Looks great. Can’t wait.

Forgotten Friday: Beetle Juice

Thanks for checking out our Forgotten Fridays feature. This is a feature to review some older films that maybe you have forgotten about or maybe never got around to seeing that we just want to share. They may not be old, maybe not forgotten, but they are not new. Just fun to share.

Today, we review Beetle Juice

Genre: Horror Comedy
Directed by: Tim Burton
Staring: Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Jeffery Jones
Released: March 30th, 1988

THE GENERAL IDEA

Adam and Barbara are a normal couple, who happen to be dead. They have given their precious time to decorate the house and make it their own, but unfortunately a family are moving in, and not quietly. Adam and Barbara try to scare them out, but ends up becoming the main attraction to the money making family. They call upon Beetlejuice to help, but Beetlejuice has more in more in mind than the just helping.

THE GOOD

This film is the very statement of Geena Davis’ charm and appeal, and Alec Baldwin although second fiddle in the couple’s charm is great as the supportive and average husband. Michael Keaton steals the show with his comedic timing, snappy banter and exciting portrayal of the “Ghostess with the Mostest” This was the relationship that got Keaton the role of Batman when Tim Burton followed up this success with the caped crusader. We all know Burton is all about relationships.

The film is full of laughs and visual wows that Tim Burton became known for, but at the time his greatest filmatic achievement was Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

THE BAD

The effects are pretty dated and while a visual thrill ride at the time, by todays standards the stop motion animation effects are just not acceptable unless you are Wallace and Grommit. Aside from that, I have nothing negative to say about this film.

OVERALL

A fun ride, and a lot of goofy laughs. You actually feel for the characters in this and hope they win out in the end. The story is complete and worth the watching, and while we find out today that Geena Davis is up for a sequel, the extent of milking the franchise seemed to have ended with the Saturday Morning cartoon (which portrayed Lydia and Beetlejuice as friends)

TV – If you are at least a little curious, catch it if it comes on TV.
Rent – If it is something you have heard of and forgotten, or just remember enjoying this as much as I did once upon a time, go rent it.
Buy – But if you are like me, and you agree with my review you should go buy it. If its featured here, I already have.

New Iron Man 2 TV Spot Online

There is a quick little TV Spot for Iron Man 2 online, and I wasn’t going to share it, but there are some pretty cool moments in here that we haven’t seen already.

The “New Suit” line seems a little off though. It should be new suitS. Plural. Briefcase suit, MarkIV Suit, and we can count the War Machine suit, and countless US Army cloned suits.

Oh, and dont forget the fanboy plastic mask suit that will get you shot by short sighted face recognition robots.
